The FA has today provided an update on the Future of Youth Football in England based on a partnership with Liverpool John Moores University, which saw them study over 400 grassroots games at U6-U14 level to develop a better understanding of different playing formats for younger players.
The comprehensive two-year study looked at the technical and physical benefits and drawbacks of different team playing numbers for youth players across the country. As a result of these findings, from the start of the 2026-27 season, The FA are planning to introduce a new format, 3v3 football for all Under 7 activity.
The 3v3 format for the youngest players in the game is being implemented to increase their time with the ball and time on the pitch. The initiative aims to improve technical skills and keep youth football engaging and active. The FA has conducted extensive research and consultation with stakeholders to ensure the changes align with the needs of grassroots football.

This dynamic new format maximizes time with the ball and enhances player development, making it the perfect way to boost young players’ skills.
Whether your team is just starting out or looking to take their game to the next level, 3v3 games offer more touches, more fun, and faster-paced action for everyone on the pitch. And with the FA’s commitment to improving youth football, there’s never been a better time to try it out.
Gareth Thomas, Commercial & Partnerships Lead at Staffordshire FA – a partner of Net World Sports – commented:
“We are excited to see the next evolution of the grassroots youth game, with the 3v3 format being implemented to improve playing experience and enhance player development at a young age. As the grassroots football community works together to implement this new format, we’re delighted that our partners at Net World Sports are supporting its development with discounted FORZA goals. We look forward to working with Net World Sports over the coming seasons as this new format of the youth game evolves“
Why 3v3 Small-Sided Games?
- More ball time for each player
- Faster gameplay with quick transitions
- Improved decision-making and technical skills development
- Perfect for the youngest players just starting their journey in football!

Why Should You Try 3v3 Small-Sided Games
There are many benefits of 3v3 small-sided games for youth football. 3v3 games provide more opportunities for players to have the ball, encouraging technical skills development and decision-making. It also promotes physical engagement, as players are more involved in the game due to fewer participants. The format allows for quick transitions, faster gameplay, and increased enjoyment, making it ideal for younger players. It’s a great way to enhance player development and engagement.

It’s not just the under 7 age group that will see changes from the 2026/2027 season. As part of the FA’s new framework each game format will be played one year later than it is currently. For example, 11v11 won’t be played until under 14 level rather than under 13s.

As part of the changes, the Laws Of The Game will also be updated to be more age appropriate with the intention of supporting the development of younger players. Some changes have already come into effect including amendments to game restarts for U7-U9s to increase the amount of time the ball is in play and further changes will follow.
The below from the FA shows how the playing numbers will change at age group level over the coming years.

To support the grassroots community with the changes ahead of the 2026/2027 season the FA has created a new Future Fit:Digital Content Hub, which will be regularly updated between now and when the changes are implemented. There will be details around all aspects of the new framework including the introduction of the 3v3 game format. Workshops will also take place across the country in the coming months to communicate the changes to grassroots coaches.
Within the announcement from the FA their Director of Football Development James Kendall said:
“We’re excited about these new changes which follow a two-year period of consultation with the grassroots game. Our approach is about evolution, not revolution, helping to increase the levels of engagement, physical activity, skill development and the volume of technical actions for every player.
“Together with the County FA network, we are fully committed to working closely with all those involved in delivering grassroots youth football, providing the support needed to implement these changes across the country.”
The findings from the study are supported by playing formats in other European countries, and based on the two-year study players at all youth age groups should benefit technically and physically whilst also enjoying the game more.
